Jean Vanier...I would like to meet him in person someday. He's a good man, and a messenger of hope!
Jean Vanier's messege is one that touches on the fundamental basis for which we feel connected to ourselves, one another, and to God: it is a messege of love. When we view the world through the eyes of love, we can catch a glimpse of what it means to be human.Jean announces what it means to love, to be human, with gentle sincerity. Through words and action, and with grace. It is a privilege to be a part of this small corner of the world where we see the messege every day.
My first memories of encountering Jean Vanier date back to the early 70ís when M. Vanier would come each year to give a series of talks at St. Michaelís College at the University of Toronto. After hearing the first one in the series of talks, I was completely overtaken by the intensity, sincerity and deep humility that emanated from M. Vanier. Sitting in the audience, awaiting his arrival in the lecture hall, I was acutely aware of the palpable sense of anticipation. It was clear from the moment M. Vanier entered the lecture room that we were all in the presence of a profoundly spiritual human being. After hearing one of M. Vanierís talks, I had to come again and again. His capacity to call me to attend to an inner life, to issues of social justice for all, and to challenge myself to be fully human have shaped my adult life.
Jean is a good man. Starting L'Arche was a nice change. It's a nice little spot. Coming to L'Arche was a nice change for me. Better than the institution. Now I live at L'Arche, not the institution. He started up L'Arche, Jean did. It was a good idea.
I have been friends with Jean since meeting him at Faith and Light. He came to London a couple of times. About two or three years ago I stayed at King's College. Jean gave a talk there. I have been at two of our houses, Jubilee and Cana when Jean came to visit. It was a good time. When I met him and heard him speak it was cool. He is a good friend of mine. I'm glad we're friends.
I had the honour of hearing Jean speak a couple of times but had the opportunity to meet him when he came to speak in London, ON. He came to L'Arche Jubilee house. I remember the real sense of peace that I felt when he came in. He took the time to speak to each of us, and I felt very heard. Jean has a great gift to speak to share with us, but I am most touched at his abilty to really hear people.
